Volcano Arenal at sunrise – La Fortuna, Costa Rica

This photo was taken by my friend Chris on the morning of our exciting Rainbow Bass fishing trip on Lake Arenal. Thick fog consumed the trees, only allowing their tips to get a preview of the rising sun. Although we were on a bridge with a sign that read “No Stopping”, we could not resist the temptation of pulling over to get that once in a lifetime shot. To the left was the mighty Volcan Arenal, one of the most active volcanos in the world. After nearly 400 years of inactivity it exploded in 1968, burying three small towns and killing 87 inhabitants. With these explosions came a rapid increase in tourism to the region as many flocked to get a glimpse of the bubbling lava. Today the little town of La Fortuna with its 5437 foot volcano is one of the most popular attractions in Costa Rica.
